Jobs Not Lawsuits: Litigation in a Changing EconomyThe 11th Annual Legal Reform Summit will be held on October 27th at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC.  The Summit will feature a discussion of the November 2010 elections with renowned political strategists Terry McAuliffe, former Democratic National Committee Chairman, and Ed Gillespie, former Republican National Committee Chairman, and moderated by Norah O’Donnell, Chief Washington Correspondent for MSNBC.

In addition, this day-long gathering of leaders in the legal reform community will feature distinguished panelists exploring a variety of timely topics, including –

  • Navigating a Global Marketplace — The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and Potential Reforms 
    Former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey will moderate a discussion on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and its impact on U.S. global competitiveness, enforcement activities by the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission, and what, if any, reforms could be implemented.
  • The Spillover Effect — Liability Issues and the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
    Kenneth Feinberg, Independent Administrator of the Gulf Spill Independent Claims Fund, will join the panel and answer questions such as: How does the fund work? Will it serve as a model for other “mega” liability situations in the future? What about the difficult issues that are arising relative to who gets compensated and how much? How will future claimants be treated? Does BP have any input into the decision making?
  • Getting our Financial House in Order – The Role of Attorneys General in Financial Services
    North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, President of the National Association of Attorneys General, will join a discussion on the sweeping Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and its inclusion of enhanced enforcement powers for the state attorneys general, the interplay between the new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection and the states, and the traditional role of state AGs in enforcing consumer protection laws.  Joe Nocera, business columnist for the New York Times, will moderate this panel discussion.
  • Move to the Head of the Class — The Latest Developments in Class Action Litigation
    This panel will feature a discussion on hot issues in class action litigation, including: employment litigation, Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores and the use of federal rule 23(b)(2) in class certification; cy pres; and third party financing.
  • Objection! Focusing on Fraud and Abuse in Litigation
    This panel will discuss instances of fraud and abuse highlighting recent cases such as Illinois Central Railroad and Dole v. Tellez.

In addition, the event will feature the 2010 Legal Reform Awards which honor individuals and organizations whose outstanding work has contributed to improving our nation’s civil justice system.
